Fashion Designer OLIVER TOLENTINO
Oliver Tolentino, Los Angeles’ coveted red carpet couturier, has been compared to the likes of Oscar de la Renta and Valentino. A celebrity go-to for everything luxurious and elegant, Tolentino’s feminine detailing and strong silhouettes capture old Hollywood glamour. With a design philosophy that stems from his native Philippines, Tolentino’s vibrant colors and prints and luxurious fabrics have earned him an A-List roster of clientele.
After a recent move to America, Tolentino set up his main atelier in Los Angeles on Melrose Avenue while keeping his boutique in Manila. Immediately, he got noticed and was honored as Fashion Week El Paseo‘s 2011 Designer of the Week in Palm Springs, the 2011 Samsung MetroWear Icon (the Philippines most prestigious honor), and he will be the San Diego Women’s Week’s 2012 Featured Designer in March.
Tolentino also specializes in eco-friendly fabrics, earning him the 2011 Featured Designer of eco-ethical endeavor Rags2Riches, the Sustainable Eco Fashion Award at Islands of the World Fashion Week in the Bahamas, and a spot as 2010 participant in the OSCARS®Designer Challenge. Through his development and incorporation of native fabrics derived from pineapple fibers (piña), abaca plant fibers, water-lily leaves, jute and raw silk cocoon, Tolentino has become an advisor to his country’s weavers and embroiderers.
Tolentino’s piña gowns have been featured at the Oscars, Fashion Week El Paseo, Downtown L.A. Fashion Week, Gorgeous & Green (San Francisco), United Colors of Fashion (New York), the Peabody Awards, Islands of the World Fashion Week (Bahamas), EcoChic events (Hong Kong, Geneva, Milan), and the OSCARS®Designer Challenge which was the first time Hollywood had seen these fabrics. He won first prize at Bali Fashion Week 2008 with an outfit made of Philippine capiz shells.
2011 marked two milestones for Tolentino when he presented a stunning 68-piece collection during Palm Spring’s Fashion Week El Paseo and a 78-piece collection at Manila’s Samsung MetroWear, both to standing ovations.
Tolentino’s timeless collection has been seen on the red carpet at Hollywood’s most glamorous events including the Oscars, Golden Globes, Primetime Emmys, Grammys, American Billboard Awards, and on TV’s America’s Next Top Model.
